SVHC Notification

Protheragen-ING Lab's team of experts is dedicated to helping our clients meet the ever-changing legal compliance challenges related to chemical, environmental, and product safety. We offer SVHC notification services to assist companies that produce SVHCs and companies that manufacture products containing SVHCs in meeting their liability obligations under REACH.

Introduction to SVHC

Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) are chemicals that pose serious risks to human health and the environment. These substances are regulated under the European Union's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation.

Substances recognized as SVHC need to meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Toxic for Reproduction (CMR): Chemicals that can cause cancer, genetic mutations, or reproductive toxicity.
  • Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT): Chemicals that persist in the environment, accumulate in living organisms, and are toxic.
  • Very Persistent and Very Bioaccumulative (vPvB): Chemicals that are extremely resistant to degradation and accumulate in organisms.
  • Substances of Equivalent Concern: Chemicals that may not fit the above categories but still pose significant health or environmental risks, such as endocrine disruptors.

Under the REACH regulation, companies must notify the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) if they produce or import articles containing SVHCs above a concentration of 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) and in quantities totaling over one tonne per year.

Steps for our SVHC notification

  • Identify SVHCs - Conduct a thorough assessment of the chemicals used in your products to determine if any are listed as SVHCs.
  • Quantify Concentrations - Measure the concentration of each SVHC in your articles to ensure compliance with the 0.1% w/w threshold.
  • Gather Data - Collect all necessary information on the use, exposure, and quantities of the SVHC.
  • Submit Notification - Use the IUCLID software to prepare and submit your notification to ECHA.
  • Regular Updates - Monitor the SVHC Candidate List for updates and ensure ongoing compliance with any new additions.
